Sunderland 5k Road Races inc NECAA 5k Championships @ Silksworth 12th July 2018 - DOMINIC SHAW went one better than last year to win the North East Counties 5k Road Race Championship at Silksworth while Wallsend's Danielle Hodgkinson retained her women's title.
New Marske's Shaw, together with Sam Hancox (Morpeth) led in the early stages before the Teessider eased away to cross the line in 14min 33secs, 15 seconds clear of Hancox with Houghton youngster Alex Brown finishing strongly to claim the bronze medal just one second adrift of the runner-up.
A high-class field was assembled which resulted in five competitors dipping under 15 minutes for the undulating course.
In the women's race, North Shields Poly's Charlotte Penfold was the early leader on the fast downhill section from the start before Hodgkinson took over to claim another gold medal with a winning time of 16:31. Penfold was a clear second with Jarrow and Hebburn's Georgia Campbell repeating her bronze medal performance of last year.
Thanks go to Sunderland Harriers for hosting a superbly-organised event which also incorporated the Northern Athletics Championships.
