21.12.22 Track & Field Athletics – (North East) 2022/2023
Season 2022 was a busy year in the North East, and, I am pleased to say, a very successful one. Your committee (I am the chair) worked hard and well to put on a full programme of activities which were well supported by the athletes, their coaches, team managers for the clubs, and all the others that are needed to make the season run well.
We are fortunate in that we have, in the Gateshead College building at Neilson Road, Gateshead, an indoor 60m track and facilities for hurdles, shot, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, together with strength and conditioning equipment of the highest order. This allows us in February to promote a North East Counties indoor track and field championships, which is well supported by the athletes throughout the five counties (Northumberland, Durham, Cleveland, Tyne & Wear, Teesside). We also put on an Open Pentathlon (60m, 60m Hurdles, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Putt). We are one of only a very few providers of this competitive event, which is why we receive entries from as far away as Blackpool, Derby, Lanarkshire, Cumbria, etc. It is a challenge getting all events finished by 5 p.m. which is why we need to restrict entries.
Our major event of the year is the County Championships which we host at the excellent Middlesbrough Sports pavilion. This event, held over two days, attracts a large entry and produces good competition. Well supported by the North East Officials Association this event is a massive feat of organisation but runs with clockwork precision. There are numerous trophies and awards on offer and the whole event is excellently pieced together by Keith Willshire, the NECAA Secretary.
The first two in the under 17 and under 15 categories are then invited to represent the North East in the Inter-Counties Championships of the North of England. The NECAA always puts out a strong team and usually finishes well up in the results, we were second to Yorkshire last year.
The NECAA also organises several other events. An ever-popular relays meeting in September, a second Open Pentathlon in conjunction with the North East Masters Association, a series of six North East Grand Prix meetings, and a 10K track championship.
Athletics in the North East of England benefits from having a strong North East Counties Athletics Association which is well supported by the various other essential bodies. Always willing to consider new ideas to further the sport, the result is a dynamic, go-ahead progressive organisation which provides events to offer a full range of track and field competition to suit all abilities and all aspirations.
It is our intention to provide again, in 2023, a repeat of these successful events with their excellent competition formats for those wishing to take part in athletics either for reasons of healthy lifestyle or competition to the highest standards.

28.12.21 North East Counties Athletic Association Statement
The North East Counties Athletics Association (NECAA) track and field committee, thank everyone for their support during the past year and hope to continue in a similar manner for 2022.
2021 began in the midst of the pandemic when everywhere events were being cancelled and athletics was in an unfortunate state.
Your committee was able to put on some open events to fill the gaps created by the cancellation of these other events, and we were rewarded with good entries. Everyone gave their best. The officials (without whom no events could take place) turned out in good numbers, the athletes and their supporters followed the guidelines laid down by the authorities, and we were able to have a good track and field season. Entries to the six NEGP events were overwhelming, and we were unfortunately forced to limit numbers and to turn away many entries. We are very grateful that such declined athletes accepted this situation with good grace and understanding.
As we commence the 2022 season, we are hoping that normality will return and have drawn up a provisional programme which we hope will be able to be completed free from restrictions. With the return of several open meetings hosted by clubs we consider there will be less demand for some of the Open meetings we put on last year but stand ready to step up to the mark if required.
The NECAA wish everyone a very happy and successful 2022 with lots of p.b’s , records, trophies, and successes ahead.
The fixture list below is provisional, please check dates and events closer to the time.
